Newcastle and the surrounding areas are widely regarded as having some of the strongest and most diverse creative communities in the UK, with groups of artists thriving and producing fantastic work both in the cities and more rural areas.

Gallagher & Turner are delighted to announce our first ever Open Exhibition, which showcases this abundance of cultural talent, featuring artworks submitted by artists from across the North East, many of whom are new to our gallery. The exhibition brings together the diverse range of practices of over thirty artists, from landscapes to abstract paintings; etchings to screen prints; stonemasonry to jewellery; celebrating the wealth of creativity in our region.

Highlights include the vibrant, Pop-art stylings of local printmaker Johnnyx, whose colourful and subversive works bring a unique sense of sparkle, as well as the delightfully eerie and intricate drawings of Charlotte Powell, which feature compositions of antique dolls and elaborate flowers.

Traditional landscape paintings, full of light and detail, feature scenes of the North East, such as the Tyne Bridge of the coast at South Shields, as well as further afield. These sit alongside more contemporary takes on abstraction with their vibrant energy, such as Beth Ross’s geometric pieces, or Alan Richmond’s Gerhard Richter-esque abstracted landscapes. But it’s not just two-dimensional work on show: figurative sculptures exquisitely carved from natural stone by mason Rory Cannon, delicate jewellery by silversmith Emine Thompson, and striking cast glass work by Crispian Heath will feature in this varied exhibition.

Some of the artists involved have never shown their work publicly before, and so provide a fresh outlook on creativity in our region with the opportunity to exhibit their pieces in a professional gallery. We look forward to welcoming these new faces to the gallery alongside more established artists, and to giving a new platform to the breadth of creative talent that we live amongst.

THEMSELVES HERE TOGETHER rehearsal

As the preview of my exhibition THEMSELVES HERE TOGETHER draws nearer, I am busy doing the last minute preparations. These always seem to take much longer than expected, and regardless of how well-prepared I am, my list of things to do continues to grow.

This afternoon Sarah and I met for a final rehearsal and to go through some logistical arrangements. Sarah and I discussed her performance, they showed me their costume and they ran through a version of the performance. We gathered together everything that needs to be taken to The Word and loaded these items into Edwin's car.                 

                                                                                         

Newcastle University Undergraduate Fine Art Degree Show - Preview Friday 2nd June, 6-9pm

I'm looking forward to attending the preview of the Newcastle University Undergraduate Fine Art Degree Show tonight.



"The Newcastle University Fine Art BA Degree Show brings together the work of over fifty young artists at the culmination of four-year study on the BA in Fine Art. The exhibition displays a diverse set of practices and media including painting, new media, film, video, sculpture, photography, print, sound, performance and installation.



The Newcastle Show will take place in the Fine Art Department of Newcastle University and nearby in the Great North Museum: Hancock from Saturday 3rd June to Saturday 17th June with a Preview from 6pm on Friday 2nd June.



The exhibition will then transfer to London where it will be exhibited in the Hoxton Arches from the Wednesday 22ND June to Monday 26th June with a Preview from 7pm on Friday 23rd June."



I've had the pleasure of working with some of the students in various capacities over the last two years, and I am excited to see how their work has developed.

NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY MFA SUMMER EXHIBITION

PREVIEW FRIDAY 19TH AUGUST 6 PM


“There are a diverse array of points that link together each of the works with one another. A myriad of different paths can be traced along this matrix. The wayfarer in this exhibition is liberated to walk about, to wander in an exploratory fashion.”

Newcastle University’s Master of Fine Art students will soon take over the Fine Art department, creating a labyrinth of contemporary art for audiences to lose themselves in during the annual MFA Summer Exhibition.

Artist studios will be transformed into a wild array of spaces. Audiences will be able to experience an architectural playground, acocoon of sound, a hybrid zoo and illuminated mountains, as they navigate their way through everything from a working film set to edible sculpture; fantastical beasts to landscape poetry; multidimensional animation to explorations in time and space. Final year student Yein Son says, “the space is changing each moment… we can be creators, producers and curators at the same time.”

Hailing from as far away as New Zealand, Korea, China and USA and as close as Hexham, this diverse group encompasses a diversity of approaches, styles and genres. There is something for everyone: painting, sculpture, drawing, video, sound, animation, performance, light, collage, installation and printmaking. Through such a multiplicity of approaches, the exhibition will feature works that reflect the range of backgrounds the artists come from and explore contemporary issues.

For these emerging artists, the MFA provides an opportunity to extend their practice, as the two-year programme encourages experimentation. As Mehan Fernando, in his first year of the programme, says, “my current work is focused on combining different materials to create hybrids. It will be exciting to see the outcome of my piece once it has gone through an experimentation process.”

The two-year, studio-based MFA programme is designed to enable students to further develop their careers as professional artists. The exhibition combines the work of first year Master’s students, alongside the work of those second year students who will be graduating, and this year will also feature several PhD candidates.

“The two-year course gives these artists the opportunity to explore their practice in depth,” says Head of Fine Art Richard Talbot. “The lead up to the exhibition is a very exciting time and we are looking forward to seeing what the students produce in August.”

“Let yourself anarchically play with space, steps, distance, duration, angle and speed as you manoeuvre the exhibition like the operator of a steadicam. Annotate your movements with the productive force of your imagination, merging and linking the pieces on display in your own idiosyncratic manner.”

The exhibition preview on Friday 19th August begins at 6 pm with performance times being advised closer to the time.

Out of Kansas - a collaborative exhibition by artists Jodie Dunnill and Helen Shaddock - Preview: 6pm-8pm Tuesday 12th May 2015 - The Lit & Phil, Newcastle

PRESS RELEASE Out of Kansas Preview: 6pm-8pm Tuesday 12th May 2015 Exhibition continues: 13th – 21st May 2015 Monday – Thursday : 9:30am - 7pm Friday : 9:30am – 5pm Saturday : 9:30am – 1pm The Lit & Phil 23 Westgate Road Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 1SE Out of Kansas is a collaborative exhibition by artists Jodie Dunnill and Helen Shaddock, in which they have responded to the architecture and atmosphere of the Main Library in the Lit & Phil. This is the first time that the artists have collaborated with each other, encouraging them to use unfamiliar materials and work on an ambitious scale. Out of Kansas is a sculptural installation that incorporates the upper and lower levels of the main library. Made from reflective and coloured surfaces, the work acts as a device for the audience to view the space differently, exploring it in new ways from different perspectives. Both artists recognised that the Lit & Phil is a library with a difference, and time in the library revealed particular aspects that help create this distinctive space. The artists sought to capture the essence of the library in their artistic response, as oppose to change it. Jodie Dunnill and Helen Shaddock are currently studying at Newcastle University on a Master of Fine Art course.  Dunnill completed her BA degree from Liverpool John Moores in 2014.  Recent exhibitions include 8BA2, St Helens (2014), and Snippet, Newcastle (2015).  Shaddock graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2008 with a Degree in Fine Art: Environmental Art. Since 2014 Shaddock has been based in Newcastle. Shaddock has been involved in exhibitions nationally and internationally, and her work is in a number of public and private collections. Recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition of new work at 1 Royal Terrace, Glasgow (2014) and Snippet, a group exhibition at Newcastle University (2015). Forthcoming exhibitions include a group exhibition at the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle as part of The Late Shows this May.
