Artists Book Market at the BALTIC
I had a short, (was working at the weekend so went during my break), but lovely visit to the artists Book Market at the BALTIC.

It was good to see some familiar faces from both Newcastle but also the artist book community around the UK. Some of the participants from the Glasgow International Artists Bookfairs that I organised were at the BALTIC this weekend, so it was, as ever, great to see what they have been working on and hear their news.

I was delighted to hear from Hugh Bryden that his recent publication Sheep penned, a collection of poems by Hugh McMillan with Linocuts by Hugh Bryden, was awarded a prize worth £1500 last week.
Congratulations to Hugh and Hugh!
To get your hands on one of the award winning publication with an incredibly soft wool ecofelt cover, visit:

My publication, A lot can happen in fifteen minutes was available on the Newcastle University table which was full of work by other staff and students. It is great to see such a variety of artists books from those at the University and I really hope that this continues. Many thanks to Julia and Erika for organising the table and to all those who helped man the table over the duration of the weekend.
I was excited to see Foundation Press taking over one of the rooms adjacent to the Bookfair, but gutted that I wasn't able to see the performance. They had been printing lots of patterned papers using their risograph machine and were installing them in the space along with a performance from Sacred Paws.

Open Studio day 1
Thanks to all those who visited me in my studio on day one of Open Studios at the South Block.
I had some really great discussions with some interesting people, and was delighted to get such positive responses to my work.
Was recommended to research Galerie fur Kunst und Literatur in Basel as they often exhibit artists books.
Another recommendation was the magazine Esopus, "a twice-yearly arts magazine featuring fresh, unmediated perspectives on contemporary culture from a wide range of creative professionals. It includes artists’ projects, critical writing, fiction, poetry, visual essays, interviews, and, in each issue, an audio CD.
Published by the non-profit Esopus Foundation Ltd., the magazine has a simple mission: to provide an unfiltered, non-commercial space in which creative people and the public can connect in meaningful, productive ways."
I look forward to another interesting day tomorrow.

GIAB 2012
Save the date : Saturday 28th & Sunday the 29th April 2012.
Glasgow International Artists Bookfair will be held again in 2012 at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

GIAB is a showcase of artists’ books produced by local, UK-based and international artists. Books as artworks, books about books, books about bookbinding, old-style letterpress books, audio books, funny & weird books and even books with nothing in them can be seen and bought.
It is a rare opportunity to access such artworks, meet the creators and purchase some original artworks, without breaking the bank.
There will also be the possibility of participating in bookbinding workshops.
Harald and I are busy working on the organisation of GIAB 2012, so keep checking http://www.giab.org.uk/ for updates

Confessions of a Recovering Data Collector
I am thoroughly enjoying reading one of my new purchases, 'Confessions of a Recovering Data Collector' by artist Ellie Harrison.
Initially flicking through this small publication, I was attracted to the colourful charts and repetitive imagery, but there is a much more serious note to this book. It marks a turning point in Harrison's artistic career; a time when she decides to stop doing activities that her practice had previously revolved around in an attempt to 'stop making work about myself and start making work about the world'. In her own words "There is now such a ridiculous abundance of boring information about other people's lives on the internet, I felt obliged to stop adding to it."

The book examines the wider reasons behind Ellies actions; living in a culture of quantifying behaviour, Thatherism and performance measurement. She also draws upon artists who have acted in similar ways. In the style of a self help guide, motivational slogans sum up each chapter, giving ideas to move forward.
Knowing Harrison's current practice, I found it very satisfying to see how she has succeeded in becoming an artist with 'a healthier and more outward-looking practice'.
She produces work that is pertinant, uses humour intellegently, and is truely committed to everything she does.
I strongly recommend visiting Ellie's excellent website http://www.ellieharrison.com/

Bristol Artist Bookfair Event
I timed my trip to coincide with a number of events going on in Bristol, and it was an action packed few days.
The Bristol Artist Bookfair Event (BABE) took place at Arnolfini on Saturday and Sunday.

Spread over three floors, more than 80 artist bookmakers, dealers and small presses from Bristol and around the world came together at Arnolfini to show and sell their work. There was a great variety of work, and it was lovely to catch up with friends from the Artist Book world, many of whom have participated in Glasgow International Artists Bookfair which I co-organised in 2008 and 2010.

Graphic novels such as Kick Ass have recently infiltrated the main stream through their translation
onto screen. Market Gallery presents graphic artists contributing to this creative boom, juxtaposing
them with contemporary fine artists who also use storytelling and narrative to construct their own
unique worlds.
Scotland is world renowned for its story telling. This exhibition aims to celebrate this legacy whilst
examining the relationship between illustration, film and fine art and encourage discussion about
how these seemingly autonomous media share common themes and motivations.
Throughout the show there will be a program of talks and events.
Please see the website for more details.

Braço de Ferro
The Glasgow School of Art Exhibitions Department is currently hosting this week (2-6 Nov) a Research and Development visit by Porto and Lisbon based Isabel Carvahlo and Pedro Nora, who are Braço de Ferro.
http://www.bfeditora.net/english/index.html
http://www.gsaevents.com/exhibitions/projectsandevents/braco-de-ferro
They are currently meeting with the GSA staff, students and Scottish practitioners working with artist books, design and experimental writing.
I met with them yesterday and took them on a trip to Edinburgh to visit:
The Fruitmarket Gallery Bookshop which has a range of artist books and lots of other wonderful publications

http://fruitmarket.co.uk/
Analogue - a brilliant art and design bookshop with a gallery too

http://www.analoguebooks.co.uk/
The Scottish Poetry Library with an exhibition of tiny artists books
http://www.spl.org.uk/events/index.html
From their visit they will develop a proposal for a project with the GSA Exhibitions Department.
It was brilliant to visit these places, hear about their projects, and tell them about Glasgow International Artists' Bookfair and my own artists books and artistic practice.
