More photos of setting up Circus Between Worlds

I was recently sent some additional photos taken by Mark Pinder from the Circus Between Worlds event. Here are a selection of images from the setting up of the Circus and rehearsals.

Pardon?

Along with Deanna Smith and Sarah Grundy, and I was one of the performers in Deanna's performance.

Where is it?

Ooh! That's a good stretch!

If only this would stay on my head

Preparing on site for the circus

The iconic Greek Thompson Caledonian Church is turning into a circus. Over the last couple of days there has been significant progress with turning the derelict (but stunning) Church on Caledonian Road into a performance space for Circus Between Worlds. There have been all hands on deck helping to make this transformation happen. We have been stretching canvas for the canopies that will protect the audience from the inevitable Glasgow wet weather.

Circus Between Worlds introduces Olivia Turner

Olivia Turner’s practice encompasses sculpture, video, performance and drawing. Her work is deeply rooted within the idea of knowledge gained through making. Turner’s presence is felt throughout her work, gaining elemental understandings of material and matter through haptic, primitive validations of touch and observation.

For Circus Between Worlds Turner is transformed into an ‘Extruder of Language’, exploring the communicative, pre-linguistic capacity and material memory of clay. Becoming one who is incapable of expression by speech, alternatively seeking a sculptural expression of the sensation of language.

The Circusmobile is packed ready for Glasgow

After weeks of preparation, the Newcastle troupe (consisting of Charlie Dearnley, Stella Dixon, Sarah Grundy, Edwin Li, Deanna Smith, Olivia Turner and me) assembled our equipment, props and costumes and loaded them into the Circusmobile (Edwin's car). Mark Pinder (the Circus Between Worlds photographer) also brought his car to be loaded with anything that did not fit in Edwin's car.

Olivia and Edwin are driving up to Glasgow tomorrow to set up their side show 'booths' and rehearse with the other side show performers.

The rest of the Newcastle troupe are travelling up on Wednesday morning, arriving in Glasgow for the first full rehearsal. Sarah, Deanna and Stella are going in Mark's car and Charlie and I are getting the train. We will all convene on site at 1pm for the afternoon rehearsal. In the evening between 8-10pm (the same time as the event will take place on Friday and Sunday) we will have the full dress rehearsal.

I am excited and intrigued to see the performances by the other artists involved.

Circus Between Worlds introduces Deanna Smith

I will be one of the performers in Deanna's contribution to Circus Between Worlds. The rehearsals are proving to be very amusing and rather strange!

Deanna's live vocal performance will consist of a group of individuals appropriating noises associated or created through circus acts. Think dada poetry, think strangeness.

Deanna Smith is currently studying undergraduate Fine Art at Newcastle University. She is a mixed media artist, working predominately with sound and performance. Her work is concerned with societal power relations, using the voice as a metaphor for this.

Circus Between Worlds introduces Nuclear Jelly

Nuclear Jelly's interests vary to encompass various mediums including dance, movement, costume, music/sound; whilst extending to further realms of ceramics, film, video, narratives, characters and beyond within their own personal practice. ‪#‎GI2016‬ Glasgow International

Nuclear Jelly brings a performance based upon a set of narratives surrounding the life cycles of jellyfish and nuclear power stations, which seeks to test the reactive relationships between sound, costume, musicians and movers in attempt to diminish individual control.

Circus Between Worlds introduces David Sherry

David Sherry's work includes performance, drawing, video, sculpture, and sound. "I am interested in performative ideas relating to everyday life. I find the processes of making live performance inspiring."

"Many of my works start as a list: why I feel or act a certain way, building up a meaning that results in a video or performance." David Sherry

Rehearsing for Circus Between Worlds

We had a really productive rehearsal last night. It was the first time that Charlie and I had rehearsed wearing our outfits, and I am pleased with how well they fit us and what we look like in them.

We tried out some alternative performance routines, and I introduced the presence of a 'safety zone'. This is basically a length of rope positioned on the floor in the shape of a large circle on the floorThe safety zone functions in the following way: the characters are trying to keep their own balls in their buckets, and when they are in the 'safe zone', they can still pick them up off the floor and put back in their buckets. However, when the balls are outside of the 'safe zone', the characters cannot pick them up. Therefore, both characters are trying to get as many of the other characters balls outside the 'safe zone'.
