KIELDER OFFSITE - XL GALLERY - Exhibition Photos

KEILDER: ON SITE / OFF SITE is a collaborative project initiated by Newcastle University’s Fine Art Department and The Keilder Partnership, which commenced in summer 2015. The ambitious year-long project set out with the aim of practically exploring the opportunities of the unique environment of Kielder Forest for visual art. The project will culminate in the creation of a group of semi-temporary works created by staff and students to be sited in the forest and Keilder Observatory (launching 17/06/16).

OFF SITE is an exhibition of work created by participants of the project. 

It is housed in the Ex-Libris Gallery opening a month before ON SITE launches in Keilder Forest and Water Park. 

The exhibition provides an insight into the working methodologies of the artists involved and serves as a space to critically question the notion and importance of location, scale and collaboration whilst working both in and outside the conventional gallery setting. 

The exhibition contains a variety of works spanning from different stages of the project, from conceptual and technical drawings right through to finished works yet to be installed on location. 

Some artists have used the opportunity to create a new work linked to their work to be sited at Kielder, but specifically for the gallery context. 

A temporary and short exhibition run has lent itself to creating works on site which suggest at the possible outcomes of some of the projects involved.

After masking out the basic shapes of the design, we began to use the tape to block in areas

We had tested the high-vis paint on a bit of wood. Initially it did not look very fluorescent, but once it had dried, it became much more vibrant and like we had imagined.

We hoped that this would be the same for when we used it to paint sections of the wall.

We were surprised and disappointed that the paint was so dark, dull and patchy. We left it to dry, hoping that this would change how it appeared.

We also tried painting a smaller section in the same paint, but this time used a roller to apply it rather than a brush.

Unfortunately it did not make any difference, and the paint was not as we had hoped.

We therefore changed our design and covered the paint with blocked areas of tape.

Tidying up the edges and removing some of the grubby marks from the wall were the finishing touches before the preview of the exhibition that evening.

                         

It's what you make of it - Ex Libris Gallery - Collaborative experimentation by Anna MacRae and Helen Shaddock

Between Monday and Friday last week fellow MFA student, Anna, and I were given access to the Ex Libris Gallery. Our aim was to work collaboratively, producing new work in the space for the space. We did not have a fixed outcome in mind and were unsure as to whether we would have an exhibition at the end of the week. Our focus was on the collaborative making process.

On the Monday, while I was in Glasgow dismantling the Circus Between Worlds site, Anna moved lots of our materials into the Ex Libris Gallery and began familiarising herself with the space. She then did a large charcoal drawing. 

 

When we met on Tuesday morning we began by deciding on the position of the three moveable screens/walls. Changing this made a huge difference to the space, and as we tested out multiple options, it became clear that we were both wanting to create the same kind of atmosphere in the gallery, and it felt like the collaborative had begun. We opted for a relatively unbalanced arrangement, where no walls aligned with one other and there was not one single point for viewing the work, prompting the audience to fully explore the space in order to see all the artwork.

We tended to schedule each day as follows:

Morning - Anna in the gallery

Between 12pm - 3pm - both in the gallery

Afternoon/evening - Helen in the gallery

We used our time effectively, ensuring that we did the work at height when we were together. When we were on our own in the gallery we were able to reflect on what the other person had done, and respond to this.

The process seemed extremely natural and we both learned from, and nurtured each other. As we had been using the gallery as a studio space all week, there came a point when we decided to have a tidy up and look at the space without any clutter. This dramatically changed things; the work was given space to breathe and it became far less cluttered. The connections that we had made became more obvious.

We were really pleased with our use of the space, height, colour, materials and the experience of working together. I really benefitted from seeing some of my previous sculptures made from food exhibited in a different context alongside different materials. They became something else and were much less identified with advertising and consumerism (two readings that I had previously been unhappy with).

The audience responded very positively to our work, commenting that it was energetic, playful, related well to the site and was tender.
